A practicing JP must keep up-to-date and informed
- Do you know the correct form of a Statutory Declaration?
- Do you know your role in administering an Enduring Power of Attorney?
- Do you know your obligations under the Guidelines on the Role of a Justice of the Peace?
The role of a Justice of the Peace is not static. It is influenced by changes to the laws that govern our society and changes in community expectations. Like many professional roles, it is evolving; and you – as a practicing Justice of the Peace - must keep up with the changes.
We help our members stay on top of developments that affect their role by holding Members' Seminars several times a year – often with special guest speakers. And we publish our journal, Justice Matters, with regular articles on developments in the law and best practice for JPs. If you haven't completed an approved JP training course before being sworn in as a JP, or your training was many years ago, we can fill the gap in your on-going professional development.
If you want to be part of an organisation that promotes, supports and protects the status and interests of Justices of the Peace, or if you just want to meet some of your fellow Justices to catch up on the gossip, then why not join the ACT Justices of the Peace Association?
Membership of the Association is open to anyone who has been appointed as a Justice of the Peace of the ACT.
The Association was formed in 1990 to represent ACT Justices of the Peace, and continues to promote honourable practice, repress malpractice, settle disputes, and decide questions of usage or courtesy between Justices of the Peace within the Australian Capital Territory in a non-sectarian and non-political manner.
We seek to do this, and keep our members up-to-date and informed, through publication of a quarterly journal, Justice Matters, the Members Area of this website, and holding members' seminars. The Association also prepares and/or distributes legal and/or other suitable literature affecting Justices of the Peace, their functions and interests.
Importantly, and by no means least, the Association organises events to promote and encourage social fellowship amongst members.
On joining, you will receive:
- subscription for the year;
- ACT JPA Constitution;
- JP Logbook;
- ACT JPA Lapel Badge;
- recent issues of Justice Matters; and
- access to the Members Area.
Membership is inexpensive, and the benefits are many. Come and join us!
