Upcoming Events
The next Executive meeting will be held on Tuesday 26 October 2010, commencing at 6:00pm. The meeting will be held at the Association's office in the Theo Notaras Multicultural Centre (180 London Circuit, next to the Canberra Museum and Gallery).
Members are welcome to attend - indeed, we would love to see you there. This is your Association, and the Executive is eager to hear your views, and gain your insights. Contact the Secretary for further information.
The 2010 Members' Seminar Program kicked off a little belatedly on 29 May 2010. More than 40 members and guests (possibly a new record!) heard the latest from the Registrar-General, Mr Brett Phillips, who discussed the role of the Office of Regulatory Services (which is part of the Department of Justice and Community Safety), and the important part the Office plays in the life of all Canberrans. The Office is also responsible for the administrative support of Justices of the Peace in the ACT. This includes managing the application process, maintaining the JPs list, sourcing applicable training providers, and hosting the swearing-in ceremony. Brett also briefed members on some important administrative changes that affect all JPs in the ACT.
The President presented a brief discussion on current options for certifying copies of digital (ie computer-generated) documents. More information on this important matter will be made available to members soon (we are seeking legal advice on the matter).
Some information from the seminar will posted on the members' Area over the next week.
The Members' Seminar on 28 August 2010 was also a attended by a bumper crop! Focused on issues of practice, the seminar covered a range of mattes inluding affidavits and certifying copies of digital documents (the latter following the receipt of legal advice from the Department of Justice and Community Safety). Information from the seminar will posted on the Members' Area.
Details of the Association's Program of Activities is included in the May 2010 edition of Justice Matters.
The next Professional Development Seminar will follow the AGM on Saturday 6 November 2010. The AGM will kick off at 11.00 am. The Seminar should commence around noon, and will last about one hour. It will be held in the Theo Notaras Multicultural Centre.
We wish to organise a Members' Lunch in December 2010. We have plenty of time to get your ideas to make the most of the occasion. We propose no particular emphasis on how to be a better JP, no long and boring speeches; just an opportunity to share a bit of your day with your friends.
What would you like to do? Where would you like to go? in previous years, we have had BBQs, and lunches - even a bit of wine exploration! If you have some ideas, contact the Secretary or the President.
Otherwise, we'll let you know what's going on as the time approaches.
